Escape from Northfield

The gang was in bad shape. Two of their members lay dead in the streets of Northfield, including the only one familiar with Minnesota. All of the gang members were wounded, Bob so seriously that he soon fainted and had to be held on his horse. Cole was shot in the hip, Jim in the shoulder, and Frank James in the leg. Pitts had also been hit. Jesse James was the last to be shot, getting a bullet in the thigh as the gang rode out of town. They were also short one horse.

That last problem was solved just outside Northfield. About halfway to Dundas, a town three miles southwest of Northfield, they stopped to wash their wounds in a river and stole a horse from a passing farmer’s team. The plodding plow horse wasn’t anything like the blooded steed Pitts had lost back in town, but it would have to do. It also lacked a saddle, a shortcoming they fixed at the expense of another farmer shortly afterwards.
